fiorgue · International Festival of Organ Mataró Barcelona

the festival    from July 6th to 18th, 2019

A big hit since its inception, the Jaume Isern Mataró-Barcelona International Organ Festival year now arrives at its eighth year. This event seeks to contribute to the singular character of the city of Mataró, embracing its history, culture and artistic heritage. The organ of the Basilica of Santa Maria is especially important, being unique in Catalonia. When built, it was the finest quality Catalan Romantic organ and is currently the largest historic organ in Catalonia. Nowadays is the biggest historical organ in Catalonia, and an invaluable witness of the industrial golden age of Mataró. Only a city as vibrant and prosperous as Mataró in the 1920s could afford the most sophisticated Catalan-made musical instrument to came out of the workshops of Barcelona. And today it continues to preside over the entrance to the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria, reminding us that Mataró has the capacity to be a dynamic and thriving industrial power.

The VIIIth Jaume Isern Mataró-Barcelona International Organ Festival is a consolidated event with a high quality music programme, innovative proposals and an extraordinary surround. A big part of the artists that have been performing on this festival, they did it for first time in Catalonia, and after it they have performed to other Catalan music events.

All the festival activities are located at the Basilica of Santa Maria, to stand out the importance of its monumental organ as the central piece of Mataró’s cultural heritage. Five concerts will delight residents and visitors, a unique opportunity to enjoy the monumental organ played by some of the most renowned artists of the international scene. Three guided visits, leaded by the artistic director Raúl Ramírez Prieto show a fascinating view of the King of the Instruments, as W.A. Mozart used to call it.

With this concerts and visits programme we hope to contribute to highlight Mataró beauty and its heritage, and give to everyone the chance to experience all the beauty and power of the biggest historic organ in Catalonia.
